Zinc Ingots

Slurry Preparation and Initiation of the Leaching Process

In the first stage, zinc concentrate is mixed with spent solution (recirculating process water) to form a slurry. The slurry is then introduced, together with sulfuric acid, into mixer tanks to initiate dissolution reactions. At this stage, the primary objective is to release zinc ions from the ore.

Removal of Impurities and Formation of Leach Cake

After the zinc is released, a controlled amount of lime is added to the slurry so that impurities such as iron precipitate and are separated from the solution.

The slurry is then transferred to the filtration unit. The output of this stage consists of:

  • Zinc-rich solution
  • The remaining solid, known as “leach cake”

The leach cake, which still contains some zinc, is washed again with acid until the remaining zinc content is reduced to less than 1%.

Solution Purification and Removal of Impurities

The filtered solution, containing approximately 100 grams per liter of zinc, enters preheating and heating tanks. In this section, potassium permanganate and lime are added, causing cobalt to precipitate as a solid and separate in the form of “cobalt cake.”

The solution then enters a cooling tank, where nickel and cadmium are removed by adding zinc powder, forming a precipitate known as “nickel cake.”

The purified solution is subsequently transferred to the makeup tank to be prepared for entry into the electrowinning section.

Electrowinning: Converting Ions into Zinc Sheets

In the electrowinning unit, the prepared solution flows through cells equipped with aluminum anodes and cathodes. As electric current passes through the cells, the zinc ions in the solution are deposited onto the cathodes, forming layers of zinc sheets. Once the sheets reach the required thickness, they are removed from the cathodes.

Casting and Production of Zinc Ingots

The produced zinc sheets are transferred to casting furnaces, where they are melted and poured into standard molds. The output of this stage is high-quality zinc ingots with internationally standardized purity.

Spent Solution Recycling and Return to the Beginning of the Process

The remaining solution in the electrowinning cells, which still contains a small amount of zinc, is returned to the beginning of the production line as spent solution. This process enables material recovery, reduces consumption, and increases overall efficiency.
